Celebrating Service at Armed Forces Day in Bicester

Standing Together:

It was a pleasure to represent the Lord-Lieutenant at this year’s Armed Forces Day celebrations in Bicester.

These occasions are always uplifting. They bring together serving personnel, veterans, cadet organisations, charities, local communities and families in a shared recognition of those who serve our country. They are not simply military events; they are community events, reminding us that the Armed Forces are woven into the fabric of our national life.

As Deputy Lieutenant with a particular interest in young people, I was especially pleased to spend time with the cadets. Time and again I am reminded of the confidence, discipline and sense of purpose that cadet organisations help to develop. They provide young people with opportunities to lead, to serve others and to grow in ways that stay with them for life.

It was particularly good to see Helen and the Police Cadets again. Having met them on several occasions over the past year, it was wonderful to see their continued enthusiasm and commitment to serving their community.

One of the real strengths of Armed Forces Day is that it celebrates service in its broadest sense. Alongside the professionalism of our Regular and Reserve Forces, we recognise the extraordinary contribution made by veterans, military families and the many volunteers who support them. Their commitment often goes unseen, but it is no less deserving of our thanks.

Events such as this also remind us of the enduring relationship between the Armed Forces and civic life. Across Oxfordshire, we are fortunate to have strong partnerships between the military, local authorities, businesses, charities and voluntary organisations. Those relationships enrich our communities and demonstrate the very best of public service.

My thanks go to everyone involved in organising such a successful day, and to all those who took part. Above all, thank you to the men and women who serve, or have served, in our Armed Forces, and to the families who support them. Your dedication, professionalism and sacrifice deserve not only our gratitude today, but our respect every day.

As we reflect on Armed Forces Day, we are reminded that service comes in many forms, but it is always rooted in a willingness to put something greater than oneself first. That is a value well worth celebrating.
