Celebrating 250 Years of American Independence at RAF Croughton

It was a pleasure to represent the Lord-Lieutenant at this year’s American Independence Day celebrations at RAF Croughton.

Although held a week ahead of the Fourth of July, the event marked a particularly significant milestone. This year sees the 250th anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence, a moment of profound historical importance that continues to shape one of the world’s oldest and most enduring democracies.

The celebration was also an opportunity to recognise the enduring friendship between the United Kingdom and the United States, and the close relationship that has developed over many decades between RAF Croughton and the communities of Oxfordshire and Northamptonshire.

RAF Croughton has a fascinating history. Established as a Royal Air Force station during the Second World War, it has been operated by the United States Air Force since 1950. Today it is home to the 422nd Air Base Group and serves as one of the United States Air Force’s most important communications hubs in Europe, supporting diplomatic, defence and security operations across the continent and beyond. Although no longer a flying station, it remains a strategically important installation and an integral part of our local community.

The Independence Day celebrations themselves were exactly as they should be: relaxed, welcoming and centred around families. There was live music, fairground rides, food from across the United States and beyond, and, as darkness fell, a spectacular fireworks display. It was a wonderful opportunity for service personnel, their families and invited guests to come together in celebration.

What struck me most, however, was the sense of community. Military life often involves separation from home and family, frequent moves and significant personal sacrifice. Yet throughout the afternoon there was a genuine warmth and camaraderie that reflected the resilience of those who serve and those who support them.

As Deputy Lieutenant, I have the privilege of attending many community events across Oxfordshire. One of the consistent themes I encounter is the importance of building relationships across different communities, cultures and organisations. RAF Croughton exemplifies this. While it has an important operational role, it is also home to people who volunteer locally, support charities, contribute to local schools and become valued members of the wider community.

Events such as this remind us that international partnerships are built not only through governments and treaties, but through people. The long-standing friendship between the United Kingdom and the United States is strengthened every day by those who serve alongside one another, work together and build lasting personal connections.

My sincere thanks go to Colonel Ricardo Diaz, Lieutenant Colonel Benjamin Quigley and everyone involved in organising such a memorable occasion. Their hospitality was greatly appreciated, and it was an honour to represent the Lord-Lieutenant during this special year.

As our American friends prepare to celebrate Independence Day on 4 July, marking 250 years since the Declaration of Independence, I offer them my warmest congratulations. Here’s to the next chapter in the enduring friendship between our two nations.
