It was a great pleasure to represent the Lord-Lieutenant at this year’s Philippine Independence Day celebrations at the Kassam Stadium.
From the moment I arrived, it was clear that this was far more than a national celebration. It was a joyful expression of community, culture and heritage, bringing together people of all ages to celebrate the rich traditions of the Philippines while strengthening the bonds that unite us here in Oxfordshire.
I was honoured to bring greetings on behalf of His Majesty The King and the people of Oxfordshire, recognising both the significance of Philippine Independence Day and the immense contribution that the Filipino community makes to life across our county.
Whether in our NHS, our care sector, education, business, hospitality, public services or countless voluntary organisations, members of the Filipino community make a difference every single day. Their contribution is measured not only in the work they do, but in the kindness, professionalism and commitment they bring to the communities they serve.
One of the great privileges of being a Deputy Lieutenant is the opportunity to experience the extraordinary diversity of Oxfordshire. Events such as this remind us that our county is strengthened by the many cultures, traditions and experiences that people bring with them. We do not lose our own identity by celebrating others; rather, we enrich our shared community.
The programme was full of colour, music, dance and wonderful food, but what stood out most was the warmth of the welcome. There was a genuine sense of pride in heritage, combined with an equally strong commitment to contributing to life here in the United Kingdom. That balance of celebrating where we have come from while investing in where we live today is something to be admired.
As someone whose Deputy Lieutenant role includes championing young people, it was particularly encouraging to see so many children and young adults taking part in the celebrations. Watching the next generation embrace both their cultural heritage and their place within Oxfordshire gives great confidence for the future.
My sincere thanks go to the organisers, performers, volunteers and everyone who worked so hard to make the day such a success. It was an honour to share in this important celebration and to witness first-hand the strength, generosity and vibrancy of Oxfordshire’s Filipino community.
Many happy returns to all those celebrating Philippine Independence Day. Maraming salamat for such a warm welcome.
