It was a privilege to attend the opening of the new Oxford Hindu Temple and Community Centre in Marston, alongside the Lord-Lieutenant of Oxfordshire, Marjorie Glasgow, and a number of fellow Deputy Lieutenants.
The occasion marked the culmination of an extraordinary 18-year journey. More than 300 people gathered to celebrate the opening of a centre that has been created through vision, perseverance and the generosity of the local Hindu community. Transforming a derelict building into a vibrant place of worship and community life is an achievement of which everyone involved should be immensely proud.
It was especially fitting that His Majesty The King sent a message of support, recognising the important role that centres such as this play in strengthening communities and bringing people together. His words reflected something that was evident throughout the day: this is a place that will welcome not only those of the Hindu faith, but people from across the wider community.
The celebrations themselves were a wonderful reflection of that spirit. The colourful Kalash Yatra procession, the sound of the Dhol drummers, traditional music and dance, and the warmth of the welcome all combined to create an occasion filled with joy, pride and optimism.
As Deputy Lieutenant, I have the privilege of attending many events across Oxfordshire, and one of the things that strikes me time and again is the remarkable commitment of communities to creating places where people can come together. This new temple is much more than a place of worship. Alongside its spiritual role, it will provide opportunities for learning, wellbeing, music, dance, language and community activities, enriching the lives of people from all backgrounds.
The story behind the temple is, in many ways, as inspiring as the building itself. What began nearly two decades ago with a handful of families gathering in one another’s homes has grown into a thriving community centre serving Hindus from across Oxfordshire. It is a powerful reminder that lasting achievements are often built through patience, determination and the willingness of many people to work towards a shared vision.
My congratulations go to everyone who has played a part in bringing this project to life: the trustees, volunteers, donors and the many members of the Hindu community whose dedication has made this day possible. Their efforts have created a lasting legacy, one that will serve future generations while strengthening the rich cultural and spiritual fabric of our county.
It was an honour to witness such a significant milestone. I have no doubt that the Oxford Hindu Temple and Community Centre will become not only a place of worship, but a place of friendship, understanding and community for many years to come.
