It was a genuine privilege to represent the Lord-Lieutenant in opening this year’s Thame Pride.
Pride events have evolved over the years. They remain a celebration of the LGBTQ+ community, but they are also a celebration of something much broader: communities where everyone is welcome, respected and able to be themselves.
Standing before such a diverse crowd, it was impossible not to be struck by the warmth, positivity and generosity of spirit that characterised the day. Families, young people, local organisations, businesses, faith groups and community leaders all came together, demonstrating that inclusion is not the responsibility of a few, but something we build together.
As Deputy Lieutenant with responsibility for engaging with young people across Oxfordshire, I know how important that sense of belonging can be. Every young person deserves to grow up believing that they are valued for who they are and that they have a place within their community. Events such as Thame Pride send exactly that message.
On a personal level, the occasion also held particular significance. As someone who has seen attitudes towards LGBTQ+ people change dramatically over the course of my lifetime, I never take opportunities like this for granted. The progress we have made is remarkable, but it has come through the courage of those who challenged prejudice, the determination of allies, and communities willing to embrace change. Pride is an opportunity both to celebrate that progress and to recognise that there is still work to do to ensure everyone feels safe, respected and included.
I was delighted to meet so many volunteers, exhibitors and local organisations throughout the day. Their enthusiasm and commitment are what make community events like this possible. They remind us that strong communities are built not simply through institutions, but through people who give their time, energy and compassion to make life better for others.
My thanks go to the organisers, volunteers, sponsors and everyone who attended. Thame Pride has become an important fixture in the county’s calendar, not because it is about one community alone, but because it speaks to values that benefit us all: dignity, respect, kindness and belonging.
It was an honour to play a small part in such a joyful celebration, and I look forward to seeing Thame Pride continue to flourish in the years ahead.
