Today I was fortunate to be able to attend the Local Command Unit awards for Thames Valley Police in Oxfordshire. It was a privilege to hear of the selfless actions of officers and support staff.
Here’s what I said to the gathered audience of colleagues and family members:
Speech for the Awards Ceremony for Thames Valley Police’s Oxfordshire Service
High Sheriff, Chief Superintendent, ladies and gentlemen,
It is an honour to join you today as Deputy Lieutenant of Oxfordshire, representing His Majesty The King, and to celebrate the exceptional dedication and service of Thames Valley Police’s Oxfordshire officers.
Policing is a noble vocation, one that requires courage, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the communities you serve. Today, as we gather to recognise your achievements, we also acknowledge the daily challenges you face: protecting the vulnerable, upholding the rule of law, and fostering trust in the face of ever-changing complexities.
As a private citizen of this great county, I want to thank you personally. Your work goes beyond enforcing the law; it touches the very fabric of our communities. You are often the first to respond in moments of crisis, the calm in times of chaos, and the reassurance that justice will be upheld. Oxfordshire is safer and stronger because of you.
As His Majesty’s representative, I am deeply proud to stand alongside you today. When each of you swore your oath to the Crown, you committed to a higher calling: to serve with fairness, impartiality, and respect. Those principles are at the heart of the trust our society places in you, and your actions remind us of the vital role you play in upholding the values we hold dear.
To those receiving awards today, let me say this: your dedication inspires us all. These accolades are a testament to your professionalism, resilience, and the profound impact you have made. Whether responding to emergencies, engaging with communities, or supporting your colleagues, your service represents the very best of Thames Valley Police.
On behalf of the people of Oxfordshire, and with the full confidence of His Majesty The King, thank you for your courage, your compassion, and your commitment. You are the guardians of our shared safety, and we are profoundly grateful.
Congratulations to all of you on your well-deserved recognition.
Thank you.
