Eight Things I’ve Learned Over the Last Twelve Months

As the year draws to a close, I’m taking a moment to reflect on the past twelve months — a year filled with its fair share of challenges, surprises, and personal growth. This quiet time between Christmas and New Year feels like the perfect opportunity to pause and take stock of the lessons I’ve picked up along the way. Here are eight that stand out, and I hope they might strike a chord with you too.

1. Adaptability Is Everything

This year has been a masterclass in the importance of staying flexible. The world moves fast, and being able to adapt — whether that’s rethinking plans or tackling unexpected twists head-on — has made all the difference. It’s a skill I’ll be leaning on again and again.

2. Cherish Relationships

Life’s most precious moments often come from the connections we nurture. This year, I’ve had the privilege of deepening those bonds, not least by getting married. It’s been a beautiful reminder of how essential it is to prioritise those we care about, even during life’s busiest periods.

3. Celebrate the Small Wins

Big goals can sometimes feel daunting, but this year I’ve made a point of recognising the smaller milestones along the way. Each tiny victory is a building block, and taking time to celebrate them keeps motivation high and spirits lifted.

4. Courage Needs Compassion

True courage isn’t just about taking bold steps; it’s about pairing those steps with kindness and understanding. Whether in my work with Cats Protection or in personal moments, leading with compassion has consistently proved to be the right approach.

5. Shared Values Build Strong Teams

One of the joys of this year has been working with an incredible team at Cats Protection. It’s a powerful reminder that when people come together around shared values, the results are extraordinary. Collaboration, trust, and a shared purpose truly make the magic happen.

6. Listening Is Leadership

As I prepare for my role as High Sheriff of Oxfordshire in April 2025, I’ve been reflecting on how vital it is to listen — especially to voices that often go unheard. The initiatives leading up to the Big Conversation have underlined for me that listening isn’t just polite; it’s transformative.

7. Honour the Past, Embrace the Future

The brand refresh for Cats Protection this year was a lesson in balancing respect for heritage with the need for innovation. Staying true to our roots while looking ahead with fresh ideas is a combination that builds both trust and excitement.

8. Embrace Being Human

Perhaps the most personal lesson this year has taught me is the importance of embracing imperfection. None of us gets everything right, and that’s okay. Allowing myself to be human, to ask for help, and to own my vulnerabilities has enriched my relationships and my work.

As we head into 2025, I’ll be carrying these lessons with me. I’d love to hear what this year has taught you. What moments or insights will you take forward into the New Year?

Wishing you a peaceful and joyful holiday season, and all the best for the year ahead.
