Happy Founders’ Day and Thinking Day!
It’s all about the apostrophe. Some would like one between the “r” and the “s”, to show possession by Robert BP alone. Others put it after the “s” to show possession by both Robert and Olave – which I prefer. Others leave it out completely, but the punctuation pedant in me just can’t bring myself to do that!
I bet CJ Ledger and Caroline Pantling have views. (The UK Scout Association’s official style guide goes for the singular possessive with “Founder’s” and then everyone ignores it and does their own thing.)
Wherever that pesky apostrophe should go, today we celebrate the birthdays of Robert Baden-Powell and Olave Baden-Powell—two visionaries whose passion for young people shaped the global Scouting and Guiding movements.
What began as a small camp on Brownsea Island in 1907 has grown into a worldwide family of millions of Scouts and Guides, bound by a shared commitment to service, adventure, and making the world a little better.
As we mark this special day, let’s reflect on the values that unite us across borders—kindness, resilience, and a determination to help others. Wherever you are, you are part of a movement that continues to change lives for the better.
And not get too hung up on the punctuation…
