From Malham to Horton

Pretty close to a perfect day’s walking. Malham Cove got me off to a gentle start in beautiful autumnal weather. Then I climbed quickly (possibly a bit too quickly) up the side on to the limestone pavement above it. A gentle saunter led me to Malham Tarn, which literally glistened in the sunlight.

Then it was a treck up over Fountains Moor, where I had lunch leaning on a wall, before climbing Pen y Ghent in the afternoon. It wasn’t difficult, but it was very, very steep. I had brief moments of vertigo, but couldn’t allow a family in front of me (including dog, grandfather and toddler) to see me fail!

A long walk down to Horton (with rabbits actually running over the toes of my boots) finished the day with time for a pint of tea at the Pen y Ghent Cafe and dinner at the Crown.

And then the day finished with an overnight at a working sheep farm. Quite the dirtyest rooms I’ve seen in a long time, but a very welcoming couple. A good night’s sleep and now it’s off to Hawes.
