Pennsylvania 6-5000

I have meetings in New York this week. I love New York. Well, I love Manhattan. If truth be told, apart from the odd foray into Brooklyn for pizza or a visit to a school, my knoweldge of NYC is limited to the island – and even then, only the blocks south of Central Park.

750 guests and a blown fuse

The Guildhall in the City of London is a very big and imposing building. It has the feel of a cathedral (having been built around the same time as many of them) and for that reason events there can sometimes be a bit stuffy and pompous. Tonight was different. Nearly 250 graduating students from Career

Career Academies make the news…

Published on April 29, 2007 by in Education

A terrific article about the Career Academy movement in today’s Sunday Times. My comments about the personal hygiene and argumentative nature of teenagers lend real credibility to the education debate! The article can be viewed on line at: http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/industry_sectors/support_services/article1719273.ece

May’s marathon

Published on April 22, 2007 by in Running

It was hot and humid. Very hot and humid. But I’m proud to say that I completed the course and am now sitting wearing my “official finisher’s tee shirt”. I had set myself a personal target of five hours and didn’t quite make it. I think my actual time will be more like five hours

Thoughts before setting off for Greenwich

Published on April 22, 2007 by in Running

I’m hoping that I’m going to post twice today… For the last nine months I’ve trained sensibly and pushed myself further than I’ve ever done before in terms of physical endurance. Today I will discover if I’m able to complete a Marathon. I look into the window of my mind Reflections of the fears I

An evening on the other side…

Published on April 20, 2007 by in Scouting

…of London, that is. To Uxbridge, home of Brunel university, Fighter Command, the Chimes shopping centre, the world’s first electronic calculator and Greater London Middlesex West’s annual dinner for Queen’s Scouts. It took me a ridiculously long time to get there. Friday afternoon is never a good time to travel around the M25, but by

IT at the House of Lords

Published on April 17, 2007 by in Education

To the House of Lords and to a reception, hosted by Reed Elsevier. One of their titles, Computer Weekly, is beginning a campaign to get its more influential readers to support education and has chosen the UK Career Academy Foundation as its way of working with 16 – 19 year olds. The reception was aimed

Insights

Published on April 15, 2007 by in Scouting

I spent yesterday evening in the company of about fifty of The Scout Association’s young national and county representatives, during their annual conference at Warwick University. They were very kind, listening to a few of my stories, laughing at my jokes and reacting politely to my various challenges to them to transform the Movement. After

Strictly Come Dancing

To Brockley today to speak at a lunchtime meeting of the Greenwich, Lewisham and Bexley Chamber of Commerce. Lovely people and loads of interest in the work of the Career Academy Foundation. But the meeting was more noteable for its location than my speech. It was held at the legendary Rivoli Ballroom. Stepping out of
